Baltimore Sun Inflaming Racial Politics9/18/09 The Baltimore Sun editorial "Let's Not Blame Race" was disgusting. The thrust of the editorial is that the Sun does believe that race is a major underlying factor behind the current national unrest. The editorial was peppered with suggestions that it may be about race, despite the fact that there's not one scintilla of evidence suggesting it's true. Does the Sun believe that if a white president had started nationalizing the auto industry there'd be no public backlash? Does the Sun believe that if a white president had started nationalizing the banking system there'd be no public backlash? Does the Sun believe that if a white president had supported and funded a political organization that gave tax evasion advice to pimps and prostitutes there'd be no public backlash? Does the Sun believe that if a white president was submitting budgets that would hamstring our children and grandchildren with 9 trillion dollars in debt eight years later there'd be no public backlash? Does the Sun believe that if a white president was intent on discarding the best health care system in the world and replacing it with a socialized medicine system there'd be no public backlash? Is it the Sun's suggestion that a white president has never been called a liar on the floor of Congress? It's not that there's no evidence suggesting this is about race. It's that there's loads of evidence proving that it's not about race. Obama's initially high approval ratings, and his election, show that it's not about race. The thunderous uproar against Hillary Clinton's socialized medicine proposals in the 1990'S show it's not about race. The fact that many conservatives were very critical of George W. Bush for tacking 1 trillion dollars onto the national debt, less than 15% of what Obama's going to do if he has his way, shows that it's not about race. Bush was called every name in the book, and repeatedly called a liar, on the floor of Congress, which indicates that Wilson's ill-advised comments weren't about race. And the rest of the things on the president's agenda are so radical that no previous president ever attempted it, so we don't know what the response would have been. The Sun's own online polling suggests that the vast majority of Americans know this isn't about race, which is what other polls are showing as well. But once again, we find that it's the fringe Democrats who can't transcend race, who are obsessed with skin color and who play the race card as the first card out of their hand. By not wanting to put this issue to rest, and the Sun obviously didn't despite the misnamed title, the Sun continues to inflame the issue. And this does a disservice to nobody more than the President himself. By not wanting to permit open discord on his policies, the Sun is suggesting that Obama doesn't have the mettle to deal openly and honestly with the American people. We've seen many good articles on this subject the last few days. Predictably, yours wasn't one of them. Editor - bethesite.com
