Pell Grants Costing Taxpayers
W
e're not against the concept of Pell Grants, although we do question the government’s ability to manage any program of this magnitude. Fraud is rampant, and will continue to be rampant, but the cause is good.
We do question, however, letter writer Ron Nicodemus’s statement that doubling the amount of Pell Grants awarded “doesn’t cost the taxpayer an additional dime.”
How can that be? Pell Grants are free monetary grants that don’t have to be repaid given to disadvantaged students by the federal government. Of course they cost taxpayers.
Reigning in high interest rates charged on student loans is a good example of legislation that doesn't cost taxpayers. Doubling the amount of Pell Grants awarded is not.
With the increase in Pell Grants, the president should also authorize an increase in investigative resources to root out fraud.
