Single Payer Health Care and the Economy

One Baltimore Sun letter writer asserts that “The single biggest boost to small business in this country right now would be a national single-payer health system.”

Where’s the evidence?

According to the U.S. Dept of Labor, in 2007 the U.S. ranked second in per capita GDP and GDP per employed person. Those countries that practice single-payer health care include Denmark (11th), Canada (6th) and Sweden (7th).

Each of these nations routinely have unemployment rates 50% higher than the U.S.

The only nation that fared better than the U.S. was Norway, which has both public and private health care.

Single payer health care may make us a lot of things, but there’s no evidence that it will make us more productive.
