Be A Patriot - Complain About Taxes

I disagree strongly with the Baltimore Sun column "Be a patriot: Don't gripe about taxes". There's little we can do that's more patriotic than inquiring as to how and on what our tax dollars are spent. In Maryland, the current tax debate morphed from a much publicized "doomsday scenario" and "structural deficient" to a situation where the governor and general assembly are now contemplating spending money on programs catering to illegal immigrants. It sounds to me like they have too much money, not too little. I agree that it is every citizen's responsibility to pay their fair share of taxes, without complaint and on time. I regret that finding ways to reduce one's tax liability, or "negotiate" with the IRS on a delinquent tax bill, seems to be the latest cottage industry of unscrupulous law firms. But I disagree that questioning the amount of taxes taken by the government is anything but patriotic. Our nation has not led the world in new technology development and GNP simply because Americans are inherently smarter or harder working than the other residents of this planet. We lead the world because we have a capitalist system that encouraged entrepreneurship and innovation, and we allow people to keep most of what they earn. Be a patriot, question your taxes.
