Will the Last Racist to Leave the Room Please Turn Out the Lights?9/22/09 The Baltimore Sun article "Dueling 'racist' claims are changing the meaning of a once powerful word" was actually a rare piece of good work by the AP. Undoubtedly, labeling someone a "racist" and accusations of "racism" don't carry the weight they used to. In fact, such charges are nowadays routinely ignored. And it’s not just buffoons like Jimmy Carter who've diluted the meaning of the word. It's all those letter writers, columnists, editorial writers and others who, without any evidence supporting their claim and with boatloads of evidence to the contrary, insist on making the debate surrounding health care reform, taxes and the national deficit instead a debate about skin color. The current firestorm started by Carter has accomplished two things. It's forced the liberal base to defend or agree with a concept that virtually all polls suggest mainstream Americans know is not true - that the foundation for the current national unrest is about race. Even the Sun's own poll suggests that mainstream Americans aren't buying it. Folks know this isn't true because they know people who oppose Obamacare, their aunts, uncles, parents, and grandparents, and they know these people carry no ill will towards any particular race. It's now apparent that Carter's scheme isn't working, and it isn't going to work, because folks have heard such charges levied without merit too many times before. The downside to this is that, as the AP article suggests, is that true racists of all colors are now getting a pass, lost in the crowd of millions of Americans falsely accused. So the David Dukes and the Reverend Wrights are lumped in with Grandma and Grandpa who are worried about their health care. The upside is this this: The far left has, in fact, diluted the meaning of the word to the point that it's now virtually meaningless. That will force the race hustlers among us, which is primarily the extreme left-wing of the Democratic Party, to find another response to those who disagree with their platform. They will have to offer real alternatives, not fake charges. The silver lining? If the Dems are forced to offer up real solutions, Pelosi may see her approval ratings top 30% yet. Probably not, but ya never know. Editor - bethesite.com
